1,000 Ugandans Evicted to settle Pastoralists

Over 1000 people are seeking refuge at a displacement camp in Uganda’s Kasese district after the government allegedly annexed their land in order to resettle pastoralists relocated from a leading national park. Area legislator Muhinda Kyetunda told journalists that the evictees were forced to vacate their homes in order to facilitate the resettlement of the pastoralists, who initially lived in the Queen Elizabeth National Park. District official Julius Kithaghenda however denied that any evictions had occurred. According to Kithaghenda, the government was simply rearranging the area’s land allocation to accommodate both the locals and the pastoralists.
